Word for Sept 17: Whiskey
Friday...everyone's favorite day of the week. So, remembering the time-honored tradition of going out with co-workers a making fools of yourself - otherwise known as Happy Hour.
We're back out on the cobblestones Whiskey drunk and high again Liquored up and gearing up for seven nights in Ireland.
...
It's Ladies' Day in Galway, and we watched the ponies run. Fifty pounds against the odds and came in six to one. McSwiggin heard the race report, he invited us on in. So we drank Catholic whiskey with all our newfound friends.
As I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin' I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier I said "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya" I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny I took all of his money yeah and I brought it home to Molly She swore that she loved me no never would she leave me But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber Takin' my Molly with me, but I never knew the danger For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey... Oh-oh, ya Now some men like a fishin', but some men like the fowlin' Some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roarin' But me, I like sleepin', `specially in my Molly's chamber But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya Whack for my daddy-o Whack for my daddy-o There's whiskey in the jar-o Whiskey in the jar-o Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, hey Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ya
She put him out like the burnin' end of a midnight cigarette She broke his heart he spent his whole life tryin' to forget We watched him drink his pain away a little at a time But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind Until the night
He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger And finally drank away her memory Life is short but this time it was bigger Than the strength he had to get up off his knees We found him with his face down in the pillow With a note that said I'll love her till I die And when we buried him beneath the willow The angels sang a whiskey lullaby
Screaming howl and the children play. Serpent's kiss for the words you pray. Whiskey and the devil and the witching hour. Serpent's kiss on that untouched flower.

I edited for only the whiskey-related verses. But this is a very cool song. You can read the complete lyrics here:

As I was going over the Cork and Kerry Mountains
ReplyDeleteI saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin'
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said "Stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya"
I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money yeah and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me no never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman, yeah, for you know she tricked me easy
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber
Takin' my Molly with me, but I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols, and I shot him with both barrels
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey...
Oh-oh, ya
Now some men like a fishin', but some men like the fowlin'
Some men like to hear, to hear the cannonball a-roarin'
But me, I like sleepin', `specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain, yeah
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, ha, ya
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o
Whiskey in the jar-o
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da, hey
Musha rain dum-a-doo dum-a-da
